Taking top honors for a third straight year is RenCap’s troupe of 25, with offices in Kiev and Moscow. The team is guided by Roland Nash, 37, following the departure last year of Wilfred Willwong. “They stayed the course and did a good job highlighting issues on both politics and the corporates,” recalls one buy-side backer. Last March the analysts urged investors to buy shares of Regal Petroleum, a London-headquartered outfit that operates oilfields in Ukraine and elsewhere, at 26.50p, on the belief that the company’s stepped-up exploration and production schedule would reap rewards. The stock had gushed to 83.75p by late January, a 216 percent advance that beat the emerging EMEA sector by a stunning 169.7 points and Ukraine’s broad market by 122.3 points.

Nash, who also leads the No. 1–ranked teams in Equity Strategy and Russia, earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Oxford in 1994. He worked as an economist at the Russian-European Centre for Economic Policy before joining RenCap in 1996. No firm received sufficient votes to merit publication of a second or third team.
