The number of mortgage approvals by U.K. retail banks were off 29% in January compared with a year earlier, while remortgages were up by a similar percentage, according to British Bankers Association. The January figure was slightly higher than the preceding month, rising from 28,907 to 28,932, while remortgage approvals climbed 5% over the same period.
