Most Institutional Investment Plan Sponsors Returns Fell In 2Q

Institutional investor plan sponsors with allocations to private equity and real estate saw modest gains in the second quarter, while most of their peers lost ground.

Institutional investor plan sponsors with allocations to private equity and real estate saw modest gains in the second quarter, while most of their peers lost ground, Northern Trust reports. According to the Chicago-based firm, corporate plans fell an average of 1.1% in June, while public funds did slight better, off just 0.9%. “Foundation and endowment plans typically have a greater allocation to alternative asset classes,” Northern Trust’s Joe Nardulli said in a statement. “In a quarter when most investment options finished in negative territory, over a quarter of the foundation and endowment plans were able to post positive gains due to their allocation to alternatives.” Despite the poor performance in June, the median plan has posted double-digit returns over one-year and three-year periods, according to Northern Trust.
