It doesn’t take a top-ranked analyst to see why research departments at major European brokerage firms would want to serve hedge fund investors. Mutual fund assets have been shifting from stocks to bonds, pension savings haven’t grown much since 2000, and investors from Athens to Oslo got burned in Europe’s equities markets before last year’s rebound.
