The attraction is simple, straightforward.

Wall Street research departments, barred by the $1.4 billion global settlement from using investment banking revenues, must generate commissions to fund themselves. And no group generates commissions like hedge funds do -- a projected $3 billion in global equity trading commissions for 2004, according to Deutsche Bank Securities.
