In 1994, when Karl Sternberg began helping the University of Oxford’s St. Catherine’s College invest its £16 million (then–$25 million) endowment, he thought he knew what was expected of him. Fram Dinshaw, St. Catherine’s finance bursar, had given him explicit instructions to try and beat the college’s benchmark, the FTSE all-share index.
