APPALOOSA MANAGEMENT founder David Tepper wasn’t exactly making big bucks midway through 2006. His two major funds, Appaloosa Investment I and Palomino, were up 1.4 percent, net of fees. But Tepper, who is best known for his shrewd investments in bankrupt companies and other crumbling credits, finished 2006 with a net gain of about 26 percent in each fund.
