Jane Buchan likes to compete at the highest level. In July 1988, as a high jumper from Portland, Oregon, she went to the Olympic trials in Indianapolis, vying for a spot on the U.S. team. Like her fellow athletes, the 24-year-old Yale University economics grad put in long hours training.
