Owen Thomas is trying to work a Manhattan miracle. As president of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, he is feverishly bringing new life -- and talent -- back to the investment bank’s once-moribund asset management division. Long the least profitable of Morgan Stanley’s four business lines, MSIM is regaining momentum by investing heavily in its alternatives platform and buying, bolting on or lifting out portfolio managers to develop new hedge fund, private equity and infrastructure products.
