Marco Battaglia has long been interested in investing. In 1989, as a senior at Beverly Hills High School in Los Angeles, he devoured Michael Lewis’s just-published Liar’s Poker, a sharp-witted firsthand account of the bond trading culture at Salomon Brothers.

“I was also interested in figuring out how to make money,” says Battaglia, 34, who grew up in a modest apartment on the edge of Beverly Hills.
