In their proxy battle with the New York Times Co., activist managers at hedge funds Firebrand Partners and Harbinger Capital Partners have promoted themselves as diplomats.
“What they’re trying to do is say, ‘Look, there’s nothing wrong with the New York Times that can’t be fixed with what is right with the New York Times,’” says a person familiar with the fund managers’ thinking.
