Fueling Opportunity

In their haste to promote biofuels, Europe and the U.S. are driving up crop prices and setting the stage for bountiful profits in commodities.

In January 2007, while touring Brazil on a research trip, Dwight Anderson, founder of New York–based hedge fund firm Ospraie Management, visited a 32,000-acre farm near the town of Cristalina, 85 miles southeast of the country’s capital, Brasilia. Over dinner Anderson listened closely while the owners explained the difficulty they were having meeting the rising demand for corn, cotton and soybeans.
