Honored

Though we have, inevitably, fallen short of our goals from time to time, they remain unchanged. And along the way the stories that have resulted from our commitment to independent, unbiased journalism have been recognized by our rivals and peers.

The final awards for stories published in 2002 have now been handed out, and I am pleased to report the past year has been an exceptional one for this magazine. In a ceremony held June 30 at New York’s Plaza Hotel, Senior Contributing Editor Hal Lux was named the winner of the Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business and financial journalism in the magazine category for his February 2002 story “Nationalities of Convenience.” The article exposed how some U.S. companies were, at time of war, moving their headquarters to Bermuda to avoid paying taxes. The Loeb, as the evening’s master of ceremonies, CNN anchor Lou Dobbs, noted, is the preeminent award in business journalism. “Nationalities of Convenience” also won the Morton Frank Award for Best Business Reporting from abroad from the Overseas Press Club of America and was included in the Vintage Books collection Best Business Stories of the Year 2003.

In a year of notable achievements, London-based Senior Editor Andrew Capon was chosen as the best fund management features writer in State Street Global Advisors’ inaugural U.K. Institutional Press Awards. For his provocative May 2002 cover story, “Is Time Running Out for the S&P 500?” Staff Writer Rich Blake was awarded the silver prize in both the Eastern regional and national competitions for best feature article by the American Society of Business Publication Editors. Former Staff Writer Justin Dini also won silver awards in both competitions in the category of best individual profile for his insightful treatment of international accounting czar Sir David Tweedie in the July 2002 cover story, “Can One Good Man Save Accounting?”

These accomplishments reflect the range and depth of Institutional Investor. Such excellence is, of course, the work of a team -- writers, editors, copy editors, researchers, graphic designers and photo editors. They should be proud of the superb work they do and of the achievements their efforts make possible. It’s an honor to work with such dedicated professionals.
