Malmgren, who in June started her own strategy boutique, Malmgren and Co., leaped at the chance to spend election night with other Bush aides in Washington. After hearing that Al Gore had telephoned his concession, Malmgren returned to her hotel in an upbeat mood. In light of Gore,s subsequent recantation, “turning in for the night was a bad move,” she says. “But at least I got some sleep ahead of a trip to Japan.”
