Philippa Malmgren, former deputy head of global strategy and chief of political analysis at UBS Warburg in London, was part of a small team advising George W. Bush on international economics and financial markets during his presidential campaign.

Malmgren, who in June started her own strategy boutique, Malmgren and Co., leaped at the chance to spend election night with other Bush aides in Washington. After hearing that Al Gore had telephoned his concession, Malmgren returned to her hotel in an upbeat mood. In light of Gore,s subsequent recantation, “turning in for the night was a bad move,” she says. “But at least I got some sleep ahead of a trip to Japan.”
