Massachusetts-based Cogent Research said more advisers are likely to increase their usage of alternatives and ETFs in 2012. In an interview, 41 percent of advisers currently using alternatives said they will increase their use of ETFs and 28 percent said they will use mutual funds more for accessing alternatives.

Cogent found that currently 80 percent of all retail advisers interviewed in the survey depend on alternative strategies within client portfolios, allocating on average 11 percent to such strategies, adds Index Universe. Out of the 22 percent not using alternatives, nearly 50 percent admitted ignorance about the strategies and how they work.
