Google Seeks To Become Energy Trader

Google Energy applies with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to trade electricity in the wholesale market.

Google Energy, a subsidiary of Google, has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to trade electricity in the wholesale market, The Wall Street Journal reports. The company is also seeking the ability to enter into contracts for carbon offsets.

Google is collaborating with utilities, including TXU Energy and Sempra Energy, to offer consumers a free energy-use monitoring tool, PowerMeter. Other companies including Microsoft and Intel are also planning to enter the energy markets.
