In his first year as head of equity research at Sberbank CIB, the investment banking arm of the Russian banking giant topped the table in Institutional Investor’s 2013 All-Russia Research Team. It was Sberbank’s first appearance in the ranking and followed the bank’s 2012 acquisition of research powerhouse Troika Dialog. Smith, 47, planned to mark the team’s success by headlining his firm’s summer party in early July as part of Troika and the Dialogs, a heavy metal septet he formed with work colleagues. “We felt it was a tribute that the name lives on,” says lead guitarist Smith, a former Citigroup consumer analyst who has been playing in amateur bands since his days as an engineering student at Cambridge in the 1980s — and who has a recording studio in his U.K. country home.
