Putri Pascualy, portfolio manager and senior credit strategist at Pacific Alternative Asset Management Co., grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, before the country had a developed capital market. She learned about business issues, cost structure and profit and loss from her Chinese merchant family, a long and proud line of business owners. The lessons that Pascualy’s A levels in economics — which she took in Singapore — taught her about how businesses, consumers and governments behave in an economic framework got her hooked on markets and businesses. Her passion for economics drew her to the U.S., where she graduated with a BA (with distinction) in that field and a minor in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, in just two and a half years. In 2000 Pascualy joined Cornerstone Research, a Menlo Park, California–based economic research and consulting firm, as an economist and worked her way up to senior analyst before receiving a full scholarship to the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley under the Haas Achievement Awards program. Irvine, California–based PAAMCO offered her a full-time position after her impressive work as a summer associate in 2006. Pascualy went on to lead a team that rescued hundreds of millions of dollars in client assets in danger of being seized by counterparties during the 2008 financial crisis, then saw those assets strongly rebound. Pascualy, 35, shared the insights she gleaned from the crisis in her 2013 book, Investing in Credit Hedge Funds: An In-Depth Guide to Building Your Portfolio and Profiting from the Credit Market.
