After having spent the past two years in the runner-up position, Justin Lake of UBS rises to third place, thanks in part to his “quick rerating of sector expectations after Obamacare” and “interesting cross-industry insights,” money managers say. In May, Lake warned clients that Coventry Health Care’s policy mix made it especially vulnerable to the requirement that insurers pay out at least 80 percent of their premiums in care costs; in fact, he estimated that 25 percent of the Bethesda, Maryland–based health plan provider’s policies would need to pay out more than they bring in. By late August, Coventry’s shares had slid 12.3 percent, from $22.06 to $19.35.
