West Coast investment consultant Verus Advisory is expanding across the country.

The consulting firm and outsourced-CIO provider is opening a new office in Pittsburgh to better reach clients in the midwest and on the east coast. Verus currently has locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Mark Brubaker, who spent nearly 22 years at Wilshire Associates, has been hired to head the new office as managing director, senior consultant, and a member of the firm’s management committee.

“Verus has a long history of serving clients east of Mississippi, and we’ve wanted to expand our national presence for some time,” CEO Jeff MacLean said in a statement. “Now that we have achieved that, we are more than gratified to have built this around such a talented and highly respected consultant.”

Brubaker most recently worked as a managing director within PNC’s institutional asset management division, leading the bank’s OCIO business for large clients. He joined PNC in May 2019 from Wilshire, where he had been working as head of the firm’s outsourced-CIO business and serving on Wilshire’s board of directors.

At Wilshire, Brubaker worked with larger clients including public pension plans, endowments, foundations, and hospitals. He has been based in Pittsburgh for most of his career, and described the new office as an “important milestone” for Verus.

“We plan to do a lot of exciting work for our clients in this office,” he said in a statement.

Joining Brubaker at the new office will be Max Giolitti, the firm’s chief risk officer. Giolitti has worked for Verus since 2011 and is a member of the management committee. He will relocate from Seattle to join the Pittsburgh team.

Verus advised on $438 billion in outsourced and non-discretionary assets as of April 1.
