Brazil has started an initiative to plant palm trees in deforested parts of the Amazon for use in biofuel production, NewNet News reports. The $702 million program will target the state of Para.

About 120,000 tonnes of palm oil biofuel will supply Brazil, while some of the excess produced will be exported to Europe through a partnership with Portuguese energy company, Galp. The Brazilian government is also planning to develop a sustainable alternative to logging.
