“What do you ask the hedge funds? How do you find out if what they’re saying they’re doing is really what they’re doing? I know hedge funds say one thing and do another. Amaranth [Advisors] is a good example of that,” Aguirre says, referring to the Greenwich, Connecticut, hedge fund that lost more than $6 billion on natural-gas bets last year. The San Diego County Employees Retirement Association filed suit in March, claiming Amaranth misrepresented its strategy.
