John Hodulik is No. 1 in this new category, created by the merger of Wireless and Wireline (where he was No. 3 last year). Clients appreciate Hodulik for being “bullish on the Bells.” The UBS analyst first upgraded San Antonio–based AT&T Corp. in November 2005, following its acquisition by SBC Communications, and has highlighted it repeatedly since, citing its growth potential. In 2007 through mid-September the stock was up 16.4 percent. Hodulik, 38, earned an MBA from Columbia University in 1996 and in 1998 joined PaineWebber, which was acquired by UBS. In second is Simon Flannery, who was first last year in Wireline. Investors praise the Morgan Stanley analyst for his “thorough research,” including a report highlighting the slowdown in new-subscriber growth for wireless services. In third, Michael McCormack, a runner-up last year in Wireline, impresses money managers with his understanding of trends affecting the sector. In June the Bear Stearns analyst issued a note stating that the impending arrival of Apple’s iPhone would help AT&T, which has exclusive U.S. distribution rights, seize market share. He raised his AT&T share price target to $44.00 by year-end. In mid-September shares were trading at $40.44.
