Regulators Look Into Canada’s Short-Selling Boom

The tactic is popular in the country, but short selling activists go after U.S. companies more often, a report finds.

Canada may have been a fertile hunting ground for U.S. short sellers over the past decade, but the activity there pales in comparison with the U.S., according to a new study from the Canadian Securities Administrators.

Some 73 Canadian issuers were the target of 116 campaigns between 2010 and September 2020, the study — called a “consultation paper” — concluded.
