August saw U.S. ETF volumes increase the most since January 2008 following unprecedented volatility, Bloomberg reports. The average daily trading volume for ETFs rose 83 percent from July to 2.24 billion shares.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, which tracks the benchmark measure of U.S. equities, increased 105 percent to 394 million per day. Inverse and leveraged ETFs witnessed high inflows as more and more investors turned to ETFs for liquidity.
