Harvey Heinbach joined H.C. Wainwright & Co. in 1969, fresh out of Northwestern University’s graduate school of business. The firm relished its status as a research boutique. “That’s all we did,” recalls the 64-year-old Heinbach, now retired. “We didn’t even put a buy or sell on the stocks. The idea was to give institutions as much information as possible and say, ‘You decide.’”
Money managers determined in 1974 that Heinbach was among the best analysts on Wall Street and voted him onto the All-America Research Team for the first time, as a runner-up in the Tire & Rubber sector. He would log a total of 40 appearances on the team, including 12 visits to the winner’s circle.
Heinbach moved to Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in 1978. “It was an exciting place to be when I started,” he recalls. “We were just building the research department. It had been nothing, but they were on a charge to create a top research firm on the Street — and I was in on the beginning of that.”
