PricewaterhouseCoopers was named the Asia tax firm of the year at International Tax Review’s second annual Asia Tax Awards held in Hong Kong last week.
Thirty six awards covering 11 countries were presented after a poll of tax executives responsible for their company’s tax affairs in the region. National prizes were given out for tax, tax controversy and transfer pricing. There was no transfer pricing award for Hong Kong.
The same categories comprised the regional awards. Baker & McKenzie was victorious in the Asia tax controversy firm of the year category and Ernst & Young was voted the top transfer pricing firm in the region.
The extra presentation, for the Editors’ Choice award, which recognised the firm that made a notable contribution to the practice of tax in Asia between September 2006 and 2007, was also made to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Ernst & Young came away with the most number of awards, eight, on the night. They were followed by PricewaterhouseCoopers with six, Baker & McKenzie with five and Deloitte, who won four.
Malaysia was the latest country to join the list where awards were presented. Other first-time winners comprised Greenwoods & Freehills for tax in Australia, White & Case for transfer pricing in Japan, Russell McVeagh for tax in New Zealand and Nishith Desai & Associates for tax controversy in India.
Asia’s leading tax executives and advisers attended the awards dinner at the Island Shangri-La hotel in Hong Kong on November 26.
Methodology
In September 2007, firms in 11 jurisdictions – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand - were invited to submit three examples of their best work in the September 2006 to September 2007 period. The submissions were eligible for consideration for the three awards (tax, tax controversy and transfer pricing) in each of the countries, as well as for the four pan-Asian awards.
International Tax Review editorial staff compiled the awards shortlists based on these submissions and tax executives responsible for the region were invited to take part in a poll to choose the winners from these shortlists.
These awards represent the opinions of tax executives on the leading tax advisers in the Asia based on their work between September 2006 and September 2007.
