The Morning Brief: Star-Studded Concert to Benefit Robin Hood’s Sandy Relief Fund

The Robin Hood Foundation is teaming up with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, Madison Square Garden and The Weinstein Co. to produce a spectacular concert to benefit Robin Hood’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. Dubbed “12.12.12: The Concert For Sandy Relief,” it will take place on December 12 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Among the performers: Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen and The Who.

Kieran Goodwin, former head trader at King Street Capital, has started a hedge fund. His New York firm, Panning Capital Management, rolled out a new credit fund on Nov. 1 with $500 million. Goodwin left King Street in 2010 after spending six years with the firm.

Are investors warming up to Asian hedge funds? On one hand, it seems so. HFR boasts that at the end of the third quarter the total number of Asian hedge funds increased to 1,128 funds, managing a total of $84.3 billion. However, all of the asset gains in the period were due to performance, which accounted for an increase of $1.9 billion in the third quarter. This was partially offset by net investor redemptions of $900 million.

Winton Capital, the London-based systematic hedge fund, has been building its U.S. stock portfolio this year. At the end of the third quarter, it had $3.5 billion in U.S. equities, up from $2.8 billion in June, $1.8 billion at the end of March and less than $1 billion at year-end.
