THIRD TEAM

Alan Hellawell  Deutsche Bank

Alan Hellawell was a runner-up last year in Technology, Media & Telecommunications. This year we divided the sector into Technology and Telecommunications, and the Deutsche Bank analyst claims third place in both. Hellawell is “one of the most knowledgeable TMT analysts in Asia,” declares one portfolio manager. He encouraged investors to buy the American depositary receipts of Baidu in January 2010, at a split-adjusted $43.95, believing the Beijing-based online search provider stood to gain significant market share after a computer-hacking scandal engulfed rival Google’s Beijing office. In August, after the stock had soared 80.6 percent, to $79.37, and bested the sector by 93.7 percentage points, he reduced it to hold, on valuation. The downgrade was premature, however; Baidu’s stock price kept rising, so Hellawell upgraded it back to buy in February, at $118.73. By the end of April, the shares had shot to $148.52.
