Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Mary Schapiro had little doubt that University of Texas School of Law professor Henry T. C. Hu was the best person to run the new division of risk, strategy and financial innovation. She has long admired Hu’s diverse background — he holds a BS in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, a master’s in economics and a law degree, all from Yale University.

“We needed someone who is committed to thinking about risk in a different way,” Schapiro tells Institutional Investor. In September, Hu moved to Washington to oversee the division, which combines the former offices of economic analysis and risk assessment. Of his new role, Hu says, “This is a chance to be involved in events and a part of the process rather than being an academic on the outside peering in.”
