Curtis Gallagher owes his passion for investing to Bill Miller, former chairman and CIO of asset management firm Legg Mason Capital Management. After growing up in Washington D.C., Gallagher attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia to earn a BA in economics. He was also a member of the Williams Investment Society, and when Washington and Lee alumnus Miller came to speak to the group, it inspired in Gallagher a lifelong interest in the markets and those who master them. After graduating, Gallagher worked briefly in commercial real estate; in 2004 he joined investment bank FBR Capital Markets Corp. in Virginia, where he worked in institutional sales, covering hedge funds and asset managers. Following the financial and economic collapse of 2008, he saw that the hedge fund industry was changing and decided that he would add more value in a role marketing hedge funds to investors, not product to hedge funds. Gallagher started talking to Park Hill Group, the third-party marketing business that is a wholly owned subsidiary of New York–based alternative investment firm Blackstone Group, and joined the team in 2011. While working full time, he pursued his MBA at Columbia University, graduating in 2013. A student of hedge fund and other great investors, Park Hill principal Gallagher, 35, recently moved from New York to Greenwich, Connecticut — all the better to study hedge fund managers in their most natural environment.
