D.E. Shaw Splits Institutional CIO Job

Quantitative pioneer D.E. Shaw will have a new co-leader for institutional asset management.

Ruvim Breydo, who has been with D.E. Shaw Group since 1995, will become co-chief investment officer of institutional arm D.E. Shaw Investment Management on February 18.

Breydo will work alongside the group’s existing CIO Philip Kearns, according to the firm. Breydo and Kearns report to Max Stone, a managing director and member of the D.E. Shaw Group’s executive committee.

D.E. Shaw Investment Management has $20 billion in institutional assets in systematic equity, benchmark-relative equity, and its Orienteer global asset class investment platform, the firm said. The company as a whole manages $50 billion.

“Ruvim is a talented and accomplished investment leader with deep experience in both systematic and discretionary strategies. We are excited to have him join the DESIM [D.E. Shaw Investment Management] effort,” Stone said in a statement.

Breydo is currently a managing director. He has been involved in the development and management of the firm’s equity-linked investment strategies and served on the risk committee as a rotating member.

Kearns is “delighted to partner with Ruvim to lead DESIM in its ongoing development, including exploring strategies such as factor premia investing and delivering new opportunities for our investors,” according to the statement.

Breydo immigrated to the U.S. from Russia in 1987 at the age of 14, served as captain of the Stuyvesant High School math team in New York City, and graduated from Harvard in 1995 with a physics degree.
