Gregory Racz
Hutchin Hill Capital

Hutchin Hill Capital chief legal officer Gregory Racz, 42, has at least one thing in common with hedge fund founding father Alfred Winslow Jones — they both began their careers as journalists. Jones famously worked as a writer and editor for Fortune magazine in the 1940s; Racz, for his part, started out as a rookie reporter for the Wall Street Journal in the early ’90s.

After a couple of years, Racz realized the life of a journalist was not for him, and he applied to, and was accepted at, New York University School of Law. In 1999, following his graduation and a one-year clerkship for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, he landed a corporate law job with prestigious Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York.

In 2006 he made the switch to hedge funds, joining New York–based Octavian Advisors as president, COO and general counsel. Three years later, Racz was recruited to Hutchin Hill, the $1.5 billion, high-flying, New York–based multistrategy firm founded by Neil Chriss with the backing of Renaissance Technologies founder James Simons and his family office, Meritage Group.
