Headed by one of the most respected U.S. pension investment professionals, Christopher Li, the $26 billion defined benefit plan of defense contractor Lockheed Martin is ahead of the curve in many areas of its portfolio — including hedge funds. Preferring to invest directly with managers rather than use funds of funds, the company does its own due diligence and research.
One of the newest members of its team is Gaurav Patankar, 33, who is an absolute-return portfolio manager. He joined Bethesda, Maryland–based Lockheed Martin Investment Management Co. in February 2010 after leaving hedge fund firm Millennium Partners, where he was a financial sector analyst.
