Goldman, Sachs & Co. has its own reputation for training successful hedge fund managers — even those who began as summer interns. Timothy Babich, 33, spent two summers in Goldman’s investment banking group while studying at Wharton.

After graduating in 2000 with a joint MBA in finance and engineering, the New Jersey native joined private equity firm Beacon Group. A year later he moved to credit specialist hedge fund Silver Point Capital. Babich established and then ran its European business — a useful background given Europe’s distressed environment today.

In 2007 he left Silver Point to form London-based Fortelus Capital Management. With $1 billion under management, its main fund was up 45 percent, net of fees, in 2009.
