UBS reclaims the No. 3 position on this roster after a year at runner-up. From Hong Kong, Bob Leung helms a trio whose other members are in Shanghai and Taiwan; together they track some 20 regional insurance providers. Leung reports that for the first time in three years, his group has turned positive in its outlook for China’s life insurers, predicting in January a recovery for that industry and an ongoing rerating of the shares this year. “Continued capital markets reform will be very challenging for financial companies in China,” he advises, “providing new business opportunities for those who are ready.” The researchers recommend that investors favor the biggest players in this segment, such as China Life Insurance Co. Leung is hailed by one admirer as “one of the few analysts who really understands the insurance companies.”
