The 2014 All-Brazil Research Team: Economics, No. 3: Eduardo Loyo

Eduardo Loyo BTG Pactual First-place appearances: 3

Total appearances: 8

Team debut: 2007 Eduardo Loyo of BTG Pactual slips one notch to No. 3, although his “above-average opinions, experience and expertise” garner praise from one money manager. For Brazil “the central question is the restoration of confidence amid the private sector, especially business sentiment,” says Loyo, who works out of Rio de Janeiro. “Confidence is bound to be a key driver of activity this year and, going forward, the most pressing items in Brazil’s economic agenda will depend on its restoration.” The nation must expand domestic demand, he notes, with less reliance on consumption and more on capital expenditure. On the supply side, Loyo believes, improved sentiment is crucial for fostering investment, removing the bottleneck on the economy and increasing output growth. He advises investors to closely monitor the government’s strategies and announcements, since “business sentiment has become more sensitive to policy choices — and policy choices themselves, both current and future, have acquired greater visibility as a product of the presidential electoral cycle.”
