In third place for the past two years, Haiyan Guo of China International Capital Corp. jumps to the top tier for the first time. Guo, who works out of Beijing, also claims the No. 1 position in Consumer/Nondiscretionary, making her the only analyst this year who captures first place in more than one sector. She covers a broad range of consumer segments at CICC, including apparel, home appliances, retailing, textiles and tourism. Investors appreciate that “extensive coverage of China’s listed companies,” in the words of one portfolio manager, who also lauds the researcher for her “timely company and industry updates.” One of Guo’s favorite stocks is Hong Kong–based Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group, which designs, manufactures and sells luxury items. “I like the name for its legacy brand name and extensive retail network,” she explains. Guo urged clients to buy Chow Tai in mid-January and highlighted her stance as recently as mid-October. By the end of that month, the stock had inched up 1.7 percent since she initiated the call, compared with the sector’s decline of 3 percent over the period. The 37-year-old joined CICC in 2001, immediately after graduating with her master’s degree in financial engineering from Fudan University in Shanghai. — Katie Gilbert
