River Birch Capital

Launched in 2009, New York–based hedge fund firm and distressed-assets specialist River Birch Capital has a serious pedigree. Co-founder Herbert (Bart) McDade is a former president and COO of Lehman Brothers Holdings and a strategic investor in the institutional equities business launched by New York boutique investment bank Evercore Partners. When it was looking for someone to advise it on business development and fundraising, River Birch turned to Meaghan Mahoney. The 33-year-old began her career in 2002 at Goldman Sachs Group’s New York offices, where she was a corporate analyst before moving into equity sales. Mahoney then switched to sales and marketing, working at New York hedge fund seeding firm Protégé Partners and alternative asset manager Avenue Capital Group before joining Greenwich, Connecticut–based distressed-securities hedge fund manager Strategic Value Partners in early 2012. Now Mahoney, who has a BS from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, is helping River Birch develop its business and investor base.
