As part of the senior team at ICG Advisors, a group that is setting a high standard for independent investment consulting, Benjamin Durrant is responsible for manager due diligence and client relations, and sits on the investment committee. The Los Angeles–based firm, a business originally founded in 1988 by onetime Oppenheimer & Co. financial adviser J. Jeffrey Assaf, builds bespoke portfolios for superwealthy individuals, family offices and small foundations and endowments.

Hedge funds typically make up 50 percent or more of those portfolios. Durrant, 39, joined ICG in 2009. At the start of that year, the firm, which had been part of Bear Stearns Cos., was spun out from parent JPMorgan Chase & Co. The U.K.-born Durrant moved to the U.S. in 1991 to attend college, earning a BA in psychology from Tufts University and an MBA from Columbia University.
