Reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could take five to six years, longer than the four years projected in a Republican-backed plan, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Researchers Chris Flanagan and Jimmy Nguyen said the Republican is flawed, noting that winding down the government-sponsored enterprises in the shorter period “would introduce enormous instability into an economy that is struggling to recover.”
