Securing its third straight appearance at No. 3 on this lineup, the six-member Citi squad under the guidance of Ferry Wong impressed investors over the past year with what one client describes as “expanded channel checking, for greater depth and breadth” in its reporting. From their base in Jakarta, the 42-year-old leader and his colleagues follow 63 Indonesian names. In October they revised their outlook on Astra International from neutral to buy, citing valuation and improving volumes for the Jakarta-headquartered conglomerate’s auto assembly business. The shares were then trading at a 12-month low of 5,125 rupiah and by late April had soared to 7,350 rupiah, posting a 43.4 percent gain during a period in which Indonesia’s broad market rose 23.9 percent. Looking ahead, Wong and his associates dub Jakarta’s Mitra Keluarga Karyasehat a favorite. The private-hospital operator should benefit from government stimuli to boost construction, they contend, and peg its stock at 3,500 rupiah — which represents a 39.4 percent upside potential from its value in late April. “Despite having one of the smaller teams, Citi has a good spread of coverage from large caps to interesting small- and midcap ideas,” remarks another fund manager.
