Volkswagen
Wolfsburg, Germany–based Volkswagen is the largest auto manufacturer in Europe, with brands including Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche and, of course, Volkswagen. Founded in 1937, the company was named for the “people’s car” (“volks wagen” in German) able to fit an average family and sold at a discount to Germans afflicted by the country’s severe financial crisis in the 1930s. VW began selling in the U.S. in 1949 and established Volkswagen of America six years later. In 1972 the iconic Beetle — also known as the Bug — passed the Ford Model T as the most produced car in history.
