Andrew Laperriere, 45, and newcomer Roberto Perli, 46, guide their four-member Cornerstone Macro group to a first-place debut. The Washington-based co-leaders left ISI Group to co-found Cornerstone (with Nancy Lazar and François Trahan) in April. Laperriere directed ISI’s top-ranked crews the past two years. Perli was a member of those teams, having joined ISI in 2010 after eight years spent working on monetary policy at the Federal Reserve. He earned a doctorate in economics at New York University and began his career teaching the subject at the University of Pennsylvania. According to one buy-side supporter, the researchers “bring not only the inside scoop on Washington and their read on the country’s fiscal outlook but also the latest on the euro zone and Japan, and what’s happening with sovereign debt.” The squad forecasts that health care policy will continue to be among the biggest stories over the next year. The insurance reforms included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are likely to result in “significant increases in costs in the individual insurance market,” Laperriere projects, and could end up destabilizing the risk-pool exchanges. “If that happens,” he says, “it would be negative for hospitals and HMOs.” — Paul Sweeney
