Yoshiaki Murakami, a leading Japanese fund manager, has been arrested after confessing on Japanese television that he had engaged in insider trading. Japan’s Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission and prosecutors in Tokyo say Murakami acquired a large number of shares of Nippon Broadcasting last year after hearing that the Internet firm Livedoor was making a bid to take over the company. Murakami, who heads MAC Asset Management, better known as the Murakami Fund, claims he wasn’t aware he was engaging in insider trading. “I didn’t intend to commit a crime,” he told a news conference. “I made a mistake.” The Associated Press reports that the Murakami Fund sold some of its shares to Livedoor at a profit.
