An Investment Dealers Association of Canada task force has called for hedge funds to face the same regulatory scrutiny as mutual funds. “Just as a mutual fund regulatory framework for the retail market was established, so to should a retail hedge fund regulatory framework be established.” Under the proposal, hedge funds would have to publicly disclose all fees, investment strategies and explanations of how funds are valued, Bloomberg News reports, in addition to disclosing any potential conflicts of interest between the fund manager, adviser and prime broker. One thing the report doesn’t recommend is an idea in vogue south of the border: limiting hedge funds to the super-rich. “We take the view that the pool of investors permitted to invest in hedge funds should be as large as possible,” task force member Colleen Moorehead said.
