Retail investors appear to love American Funds, as the fund is giving the mutual fund giant The Vanguard Group a run for its money in terms of assets. Sttill, that could not offset the number of institutional investors heading for the door at American's parent, the Capital Group. According to Financial Times, The California-based company experienced $80 billion in inflows last year, but also $40 billion in outflows, resulting in assets under management falling from $317 billion to $305 billion. The problem, notes FT, is the fact that while last year its international portfolio well outperformed the market with a 20% return, it came a few years after less than stellar performance, which appears to have soured investors. "We encourage our clients to look at five-year and 10-year performance," Chuck Freadhoff, a Capital spokesman told FT, but it may not be working. Industry analysts say the Capital's capital may continue to keep flowing out as investors continue to worry about the company's performance outside the U.S.
