Now that the Dubai's DP World has pulled up anchor on its U.S. ports operation deal, there is speculation that maybe a non-port company would hop aboard. The Financial Times notes that The Blackstone Group, among other, unnamed private equity firms, reportedly has expressed interest in acquiring U.S. operations of London-based The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which was at the center the dispute. Australia's Macquarie Bank, whose love for infrastructure is no secret, is another possibility, says the FT, but it may be out of contention if the U.S. remains steadfast in its desire for an American company to run the ports. The FT suggests that two companies that may cruise through the P&O deal process are SSA Marine, based in Seattle, the biggest U.S.-owned terminal operator, and New York-based Maher Terminal, where Ted Bilkey, the current chief operating officer of DP World, once worked.
