Guilty pleas by two former New York Stock Exchange floor traders are expected to have an impact on similar cases in which specialists are charged with making money for their firms by placing company orders ahead of those of their customers. The Associated Press reports that the pleas by Joseph Bongiorno and Patrick McGagh Jr., former members of Van der Moolen Specialists USA’s management committee, “are groundbreaking on their own because they are expected to change the tenors” of cases against about 10 other specialists facing criminal charges for similar frontrunning. Both men admitted that they knew their actions were wrong, and, when sentenced in August, will receive at most 10 years in prison, half of the maximum penalty of 20 years.
