The way some financial service firms have been playing it, baby boomers are headed for retirement disaster, but a Congressional Budget Office report indicates that about 50% of boomers are well-prepared enough to be able to live their golden years in the lifestyle they’ve been accustomed to. The office’s review of some 20 reports also indicates that remaining numbers are split evenly between the have-nots (those facing financial difficulty) and those whose financial future can be best described as uncertain. “I’m not minimizing the problems that some people have,” financial planner Jonathan Pond told the Arizona Republic, “but the situation isn’t so bad as the financial services industry asserts.” Pond says “the trump card” is the family home, in which there may be a gold mine of equity.
